Hitting the Ground Running

We are excited to hit the ground running, continuing our learning with set routines and an established sense of community in our grades.

Literacy

The Little Learners Love Literacy (LLLL) program will continue to provide a structured whole class learning sequence and resources for individualised learning. We encourage at-home reading to continue as well as the practising of levelled Heart Words. We remind you that the take home readers should be at an ‘independent’ level for your children, should be enjoyable to read together and provide an opportunity to practice skills other than decoding, such as fluency and comprehension.

Our writing focus for the term will be on the text structure and features of persuasive texts, followed by information reports. Throughout these units, students will be practising the use of conjunctions, and furthering their understanding of sentence structure.

At home you can:

Read and fill in the reading log book.
Use the LLLL online platform for targeted digital books (login in reading log books).
Practise heart words (in random order).
Take authentic opportunities for reading and writing practise such as reading menus or writing cards.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students will be developing their understanding and fluency when recognising and continuing patterns and number sequences. They will then participate in a unit on time, describing the duration and sequence of events using years, months, weeks, days and hours.

At home you can:

Practise skip counting (especially by 2s, 5s and 10s).
Notice patterns in the world (number or otherwise).
Discuss the date, the time, etc.
Use timers for daily tasks.
Log in to Essential Assessment and complete My Numeracy tasks. Please email your child’s teacher if you do have have but would like your child’s login details.

Inquiry & Respectful Relationships (RRRR)

This term, our Inquiry and RRRR focus are closely integrated. Students will learn through the Talking the Talk program about body boundaries and gender. They will also learn about general health and safety in their communities and this will include identifying and exploring natural and built environments in the local area where physical activity can take place.

Specialist Subjects

Performing Arts

Students will continue to learn various chords on the ukulele and reading traditional music notation on other Orff instruments. Students will also use process drama to learn about creating tension and comedic moments on stage and create choreography for their peers to copy.

Physical Education

Students will continue to practise their gross motor skills while doing movement activities. They will also practise fundamental motor skills such as underarm and overarm throw and catching.

Science

This term students are continuing with their work on living things, looking at how their features help them to survive.

Visual Arts

Students will continue to focus on hot and cold colours, adding print and pattern-making to extend their work. They will be channelling Albert Namatjira’s obsession with Australian gum trees, as they head outside to sketch their own. A range of drawing tools and watercolours will be explored.
